4e. Who played on the Beach Boys albums?
The earliest Beach Boys music included instrumentation from the group itself, but in the 1963 - 1967 period, Brian relied on some of the best session musicians in California, sometimes known as the Wrecking Crew, for many of the Beach Boys tracks, although the group still played on many songs from that period. Some of the common session musicians used in that period were
Drums: Hal Blaine
Horns: Steve Douglas, Jay Migliori, Roy Caton, Lou Blackburn
Guitars: Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, Jerry Cole, Barney Kessel, Billy Strange
Bass: Ray Pohlman, Carole Kaye, Lyle Ritz, Julius Wechter, Bill Pitman
Harmonica: Tommy Morgan
Accordian: Carl Fortina, Frank Marocco
Piano: Leon Russel, Al De Lory, Don Randi
Percussion: Gene Estes, Frank Capp, Jim Gordon
Strings: The Sid Sharpe Strings
Brian did some keyboards himself and Carl some guitar parts.
From 1967 to 1971, when much of the recording was done in Brian's home studio, much of the instrumentation was done by the Beach Boys with a much reduced group of outside musicians. Subsequent albums had many different musicians on them, with varying amounts of involvement by the Beach Boys.
